Proper chants for the Ordinary-Form Confirmation Mass
December 15, 2009 by — 2 comments.
Today for the first time ever, I was asked to provide input on music for a Confirmation Mass. This particular Mass is to be held at St. Ignatius on May 8, 2010.
Not knowing if there was music specifically for this Mass, I referred to the 1974 Graduale Romanum. Sure enough, on page 644 one can [...]

The Propers of the Mass: The Word of God Singing To Us, With Us, Through Us

(NB: This is a working draft of an article that may or may not appear elsewhere. Comments and constructive criticism encouraged.)
In a 2006 letter, Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin reminded us of the Second Vatican Council’s clear teaching about where the presence of Christ occurs during the Mass:

Gloria XI, in segmented MP3 files
April 23, 2009 by — 0 comments.

Yet, you dwell in the sanctuary; you are the [...]

What we must do is trying to choose liturgical music is sort out some basic questions: First of all, what [...]

Pope Pius VI on sacred music, etc.
March 11, 2009 by — 0 comments.
This was posted by user “Chrism” in the MusicaSacra Forum. I have added a few more boldface emphases:
Today happens to be the 218th anniversary of the Papal Encyclical Quod Aliquantum of Pius VI, to Cardinal Rochefoucauld and the bishops of the National Assembly of France, March 10, 1791, on the subject of the infamous Civil [...]

On chanting by heart, from the heart
October 6, 2008 by — 0 comments.
Starting last week, I started to memorize two of the simpler Gregorian Chant propers for the upcoming Sundays; namely the Introit and Communion antiphons. The motive was to so as to better internalize the melody, text and meaning of each.
It makes a huge difference.
From my brief experience, it liberates the chant from the printed page [...]
