Support a Catholic Speaker Month – Thomas E. Woods

Fellow Facebook contact and Catholic blogger Matthew Warner (Fallible Blogma) put together the Support a Catholic Speaker Month initiative in October, and from the list of speakers I chose Dr. Thomas E. Woods.

(Above: Dr. Woods on an Oct. 19, 2009 airing of Dennis McCuistion’s Dallas PBS–based interview show.)

Dr. Woods is one of the more prominent Catholic and libertarian thinkers of our day. A prolific author, he has authored nine books, including the recent New York Times bestseller Meltdown: A Free-Market Look at Why the Stock Market Collapsed, the Economy Tanked, and Government Bailouts Will Make Things Worse. He has written the following books of particular interest to Catholics:

  • Sacred Then and Sacred Now: The Return of the Old Latin Mass
  • How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization
  • The Church and the Market: A Catholic Defense of the Free Economy
  • The Church Confronts Modernity

Dr. Woods is currently a Senior Fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama.[1] You may visit his website at TomWoods.com and learn more about him on his About page.

Notes:

  1. Disclaimer: I work for the Mises Institute as an independent contractor; however, I have no direct personal or material connection with Dr. Woods at the time of this writing. []

Woods’ interpretation of what the Magisterium has to say in the field of social teaching is, to say the least, controversial. I don’t know if that is his only or main field of speaking, but folk who don’t know him should have a look around before they give him money – I would give my money elsewhere, if giving to someone because of their Catholic speakerhood (I’m not casting any aspersions on him personally, and for all I know the rest of his stuff kicks ass).

I am so glad you’re supporting Thomas Woods! He is my favourite author as he represents my views both politically and liturgically. His writing is a nice counterpoint to a lot of the modernist rubbish that comes out of the social justice wing of the Church.

(And working for the LvMI would be my dream, for what it’s worth!)
