SMTV, Vol. II, No. 9.4 – Spem in alium (Tallis)

numquam hábui praeter in te
Deus Israel
qui irascéris
et propítius eris
et ómnia peccáta hóminum in tribulatióne dimíttis
Dómine Deus
Creátor coeli et terra
réspice humilitátem nostram

I have never put my hope in any other but in you
God of Israel
who will be angry
and yet become again gracious
and who forgives all the sins of suffering man
Lord God
Creator of Heaven and Earth
look upon our lowliness

  1. Wow. And again, I say unto thee: Wow.

For those in the know (in other words, any reader of this estimable weblog), this is a motet in 40 parts, that is, eight choirs of five parts each. And one man sings it, rather well, under the circumstances.

I’m not saying this is the King’s Singers’ version. There are some clunkers here. But this is probably every bit as good as the first performance in the halls of the Duke of Norfolk who commissioned it.

Thank you, AAE, for introducing me to it, and to the Choir of Cheahs.

  2. Norm says:

Outstanding! To be able to sing that well and to mix so many parts into a coherent performance displays great talent. I wonder what the next project will be for the Choir of Cheahs ?
