SMTV Vol. II, No. 2.2 – O Sacrum Convivium (Messiaen)
O sacrum convivium!
in quo Christus sumitur:
recolitur memoria passionis ejus:
mens impletur gratia:
et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur.
Alleluia.
O sacred banquet!
in which Christ is received,
the memory of his Passion is renewed,
the mind is filled with grace,
and a pledge of future glory to us is given.
Alleluia.
- Hymn Writer: St. Thomas Aquinas
- Composer: Olivier Messiaen

A nice counterbalance to the pre-conciliar emphasis on sacrifice, my parish’s patron manages, in one stanza, to highlight the aspect of meal in a communal setting, and point to God’s desire for his people: our future union with the Trinity.
Ugh! Aristotle!! It’s **MY** job to cram 20th century music down the throats of Catholics who just want to sing from the white list!
Incidentally, most Catholic music directors would protest that this piece “is too hard for us” (w/ apologies to John 6). But I heard a volunteer Presbyterian (!) choir sing this at a concert earlier this year.
I’m just sayin…
