Ineffabilis

I was going to write a bit more about the ICEL translation copyright issue, but this NLM post ended up making me way too angry to think straight. (”Don’t post angry, do not post angry.”)

However, it did remind me of one more World Youth Day 2008 story.

When we arrived in Sydney late Monday night, each of us was given a backpack containing a number of items including a dyno torch, rosary, pilgrim and liturgy guide, a book of beautiful Australian panoramas centered on the WYD theme, and a softcover copy of the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

That night after settling into the room that my host gave me, I started reading the Compendium, and to my great surprise and delight, what word did I encounter?

Ineffable.

Not once, but twice.

I remembered that this Compendium was published three full years before the latest round of liturgical translation squabbles, smiled, and went to sleep.
