I recently helped plan music for a "big" Mass.... when I opened the discussion of "what hymns are we going to sing?" by asking, well first, what Mass would we be using, and what were the propers for it, the blank looks I got from clerics and liturgists left me almost despairing. The propers are not only never used, they are not even a point of departure for most musical choices, and their very existence seems to be a secret from TPTB in many places. (Save the Liturgy, Save the World) Thanks for this.
