I recently helped plan music for a &quot;big&quot; Mass.... when I opened the discussion of &quot;what hymns are we going to sing?&quot; by asking, well first, what Mass would we be using, and what were the propers for it, the blank looks I got from clerics and liturgists left me almost despairing.
The propers are not only never used, they are not even a point of departure for most musical choices, and their very existence seems to be a secret from TPTB in many places.
