Propers for the Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit (with audio and translations)

With all the talk about musical styles regarding today’s Papal Mass in Washington D.C., it might be useful to take a look at what the 1974 Graduale Romanum—the official songbook of the ordinary form of the Latin Rite—prescribes for today’s concluded Mass; after all, according to the GIRM, the texts and music found in the Graduale Romanum are those that receive the most weight in the Latin Rite.

According to the Ordo, today’s Mass at Nationals Park was a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit.

The proper chants for this Mass in Paschal time as found in the Graduale Romanum, selected audio clips of these chants, and translations of the Scripture verses cited by the proper antiphons are available after the break.

TRANSLATIONS

Introit: Caritas Dei diffusa est

Romans 5:5,10-11
5And hope confoundeth not: because the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost, who is given to us.
10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
11And not only so; but also we glory in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received reconciliation.

Psalm 103:1
1For David himself. Bless the Lord, O my soul: and let all that is within me bless his holy name.

Introit: Spiritus Domini replevit orbem

Wisdom 1:7
7For the spirit of the Lord hath filled the whole world: and that, which containeth all things, hath knowledge of the voice.

Psalm 68:2
2Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: and let them that hate him flee from before his face.

Alleluia*: Emitte Spiritum tuum

Psalm 104:30
30Thou shalt send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Alleluia: Veni, Sancte Spiritus

From the Roman Missal

Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful: and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Communion: Spiritus Sanctus docebit vos

John 14:26
26But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.

    Thanks for this.
(Also beautiful new look to your ‘blog — or is it not new, and I just haven’t visited recently?)
I recently helped plan music for a “big” Mass…. when I opened the discussion of “what hymns are we going to sing?” by asking, well first, what Mass would we be using, and what were the propers for it, the blank looks I got from clerics and liturgists left me almost despairing.
The propers are not only never used, they are not even a point of departure for most musical choices, and their very existence seems to be a secret from TPTB in many places.

(Save the Liturgy, Save the World)

  2. DEO GRATIAS, this has relieved the sickness in my stomach after that “Mass”

[...] Can one safely assume that the Holy Father by extension favorably addressed the music that, in text, delivery, and arguably spirit, replaced the propers for that day? [...]
