Music for the Pope’s Vespers service at the National Shrine
Michael Lawrence at NLM live-blogged the event based on EWTN’s broadcast of it. In addition to the items revealed in the official Ordo of the Pope’s visit, Michael reports also the singing of:
- John Taverner’s setting of Dum transisset Sabbatum (score available on CPDL)
- Maurice Durufle’s setting of Tu es Petrus
- magnificent organ improvisations
- “At the Lamb’s High Feast”, which is the Vespers hymn for Eastertide (Latin: Ad regias Agni dapes)
- polyphonic setting of the Gloria Patri following the Magnificat
- The Lord’s Prayer sung in Latin
- The Regina Caeli sung in Latin
After all is said and done, this Vespers may end up being the liturgical highlight of the Pope’s entire visit, simply because the liturgy seems to have been sung—well—to the prescribed texts (or a translation thereof).
*As I was working at the time of the event/live broadcast, I base my opinions on those offered by Michael and others about this service. If anyone can find a link to a video clip of this Vespers service anywhere, please share it in the comment box. Thanks.

Here’s a website with all of the events of the Holy Father’s visit to the U.S. You can watch it live or archived in the Video Audio section.
There was also a wonderful William Byrd piece in the prelude - Laudibus in sanctis - Magnificum Domini - Hunc arguta. This unfortunately did not make it into the printed program or the video I saw, found online at:

You can find the score for this piece at:

(we sang it up a minor third).
The polyphonic setting following the Magnificat was only part of the Gloria Patri - we sang a Tomas Luis de Victoria setting of the text beginning at Sicut erat in principio.
Marj (an alto in the choir)
