GNU Solfege for Windows and Linux

Ear-training software has gone open-source! I haven’t yet attempted the intonation exercises since I have to tinker a bit with my Linux configuration, but this could be a very useful tool for choir members who use Windows (or are Linux enthusiasts or better). The price is definitely right.

Update (2007.12.03): Partial intonation exercise capability was activated in Linux after adding the following two lines to the /etc/profile file:

export OPCODEDIR=/usr/lib/csound/pluginsexport
CSSTRNGS=/usr/share/csound/xmg

The program seems limited to ear training on perfect fifths; on my configuration, the detuning works only to 99.5% — anything finer doesn’t play. However, I’m sure that code can be added to extend its functionality to other intervals, and that the more difficult intonation exercises can be enabled.

At any rate, I believe Solfege will go a long way in helping choirs achieve better tuning and more active listening, and much more. A hearty “Bravissimo” to its developers!
