Perhaps the winner knows it neither from music classes nor from rote memorizationnot that either is a bad thingbut rather from from wide and well-informed personal reading. Or perhaps wee little factlets cling to his or her brain like lint to a black sweater in the winter.
Another possibility – the vague recognition of this word as originating in the Italian language, and a basic understanding of the phonetic sounds comprising the words would have given the speller a good shot at the correct spelling of “appoggiatura”.
