I have a perhaps stupid and obvious question but hopefully someone will read this and have an answer:

What kind of organ is there at the Vatican? I had read somewhere that a Wurlitzer “toaster” was once installed somewhere there, but that’s as much as I can find out. Someone who knows, fill me in.

The organ at St. Peter’s is a four-manual pipe organ built by Ditta Giovanni Tamburini in 1954 and 1962. I’ll be glad to post the specs someone sent me on my Christus Vincit blog (http://christusvincit.blogspot.com) upon request.

Further, did anyone know the Vatican organist is an American? Here’s a link:

Enjoy.

I heard him play at St. James’ Cathedral in Orlando around ten years ago. He is, shall we say, really good, and his Italian-accented English (after so many years in Rome) is kind of funny.

Interestingly, asked to comment on which organs (by country) he preferred, he said he really liked American organs.

Ed, if you are from Florida (as your posts indicate), could you drop me a line with your email address, please? I have some questions for you.

Thanks!

Greg

Thanks a lot. I’ve seen the Cavaille-Coll specifications, a real shame that organ was never built.

I heard James Goettsche play last night on a new organ at the Church of the Immaculate Conception [Baltimore MD] last night. He does a fine job (as one might expect]. I must say, however, that I was quite disappointed with the organ. I have to do some homework, but I believe it was a Rodgers digital — and, that’s enough said! Long live the pipe . . .
