Russian Choir and the Panikhida at the Pope’s Funeral

Edward Yang gives an excellent overview of the Eastern Christian service at the end of the papal funeral that took place one week ago today.

I must say I was deeply affected during the eastern guys’ singing. Still don’t know why. I could say it sounded cruder yet (or thus) more directly honest and heartfelt than the lovely Latin tones, but that wouldn’t quite express it. I was nearly mesmerized. They sounded like a bunch of brothers and friends took over the Mass from a bunch of trained Angels. These were guys who might have booted your a** as a kid if you were bullying some innocent kid or you were stealing stuff but who now were there chanting directly from their hearts for you, asking, almost telling the big man to go easy.
