Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria/Angelus Domini

Note to self: get a CD of this piece and program the stereo to play it at 6:00 AM every morning.

Here’s an MP3 of verses 1 and 3 as sung (in rehearsal) by the Alliance Choir of Boston’s Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

And here’s an FM-quality MP3 of the Chanticleer rendition.

i LOVE biebl’s angelus-based ave maria.
and i have it on CD. email me if you want a copy. :)

The Glee Club from the University of Notre Dame performs the Biebl “Ave Maria” at all of their concerts. I admit to a preference for this men’s chorus arrangement over the mixed-chorus arrangement. It’s on their latest CD, “In Dulci Jubilo” available at http://gleeclub.nd.edu.

I would urge the RCD (recovering choir director) not to give up on music in the church. Just about the time I begin thinking about it I hear something like the Biebl and get charged up all over again. Keep the faith!

I’m kinda biased, being an alumnus and all, but if you’re interested in a really spectacular recording of Franz Biebl’s Angelus Domini, see if you can’t find a copy of St. Michael’s Choir School’s “The Heavens are Telling.” The whole recording is actually quite impressive, not suprising though, considering the caliber of the choirs involved.

Years ago I had the JOY of hearing this piece sung by Chanticleer with the US Army Men’s Chorus at the Disney Institute (angelus sung by Army soloists, Ave sung by Chanticleer).

The rest of the program was pretty good, too.

Here’s another great version… Found this about 4-5 years ago and it was just what I needed at that point in my life.

Truly my second-most favorite work of art of all time…
