For myself, I listened to a lot of recordings, memorized as much as I could, and learned (by means of the records) to read the scores. However, I would also recommend Willi Apel's book on Gregorian chant. It is cheap, online, if used. I think Apel's book is a good starting point, and it is INTERESTING (at least compared to many others on the subject, e.g. Hiley's). It is good to know that therer are many other versions of chant, besides the Vatican edition (which is what the Liber Usualis represents), but at the same time, the Liber Usualis is easy to obtain, and the Vatican Edition is as good an edition as any.
