CD tutorial: Orate fratres

The Latin Liturgy Association has just released Orate fratres, an audio tutorial for priests, deacons and seminarians who wish to sing the Mass in Latin according to the current Missale Romanum.

The CD is available through CanticaNova Publications. Whether people will take advantage of this opportunity is another question entirely.

The thing to do is to buy them and send them to priests you know, especially young ones. It might not mean a Latin Mass in six months or a year or whatever, but it could have a powerful effect in other ways–just in changing the sensibility of the liturgy. This seems like a very good and constructive step to take.

This is one of three really useful CDs produced by the Music Makers in England:

- ‘Orate Fratres’ features recodings to guide priests in chanting and reciting the Mass in Latin (including a full rendition of texts such as the Exsultet).

- ‘Let us proclaim the Mystery of Faith’ provides a similar service for the Mass in English.

- ‘Plainsong for Parishes’ has recordings of Mass I, Mass IV, Mass VIII, Mas IX, Mas XI, Mas MVII and Mass XVIII. If only every parish had all those in its repertoire!

The recordings are crisp and clear - ideal for clergy who don’t read music or neums but wish to ‘listen and learn’.

(This post has ended up sounding like a commercial. I wonder whether they’ll give me a cut…)

As the person who made these 3 CDs, I am most gratified to have come across this discussion of our work. Readers may be interested to learn that we are just about to launch a 4th CD, entitled Adoro te, which contains Latin chant and hymns (in English and Latin) to the Blessed Sacrament. This is in response to the Holy Father’s call for a “Year of the Eucharist” and the CD is again to be used as a tutorial for those wishing to learn the chants and hymns in order to encourage Eucharistic adoration. The CD will be available in early January 2005 and will be available in North America from CanticaNOVA Publications - http://www.canticanova.com as with the other 3 CDs.

I hope this is of help.
