Byzantine Ruthenian Liturgical Chant

Members of the Church of the Patronage of the Mother of God, an Eastern Catholic parish in the Byzantine Ruthenian Rite, have made available MIDI transcriptions and notation of Carpathian plainchant. Also available is the entire volume of Tserkovnoje Prostopinije (Church Plainchant) in Church Slavonic.

Dear AAE:

Thank you for this posting. While I already have a hardbound copy of Bokshai’s “Prostopinije”, and have downloaded the pdf file, nonetheless it is good to see what the Ruthenians have been doing lately.

Regarding that, two Yahoo Groups may be worthy of review also, at least one of which has been mentioned by the Church of the Patronage website:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/podoben

and

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/prostopinije

The first group includes files and an e-group devoted to the study of special melodies used in Byzantine and various families of Slavic chant.

The second group concerns itself with the Carpatho-Rusyn chant, and the associated Galician chant, two varieties of Slavic chant which both appear descended from Znamenny chant.
