"Is the New Mass Really a Return to Patristic Sources?"
Fr. Romano Thommasi’s article in Seattle Catholic calls to mind the following quotations:
[I]n the place of liturgy as the fruit of development came fabricated liturgy. We abandoned the organic, living process of growth and replaced it…with a fabrication, a banal on-the-spot product.
- Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, 1993
Let it be candidly said: the Roman Rite which we have known hitherto no longer exists. It is destroyed.
- Joseph Gelineau, S.J., 1979

Peace, all.
I was struck by Tommassi’s mean-spiritedness toward Piero Marini in his article. It would be one thing if the “author,” as he refers to himself, would have stated his opinion clearly. Instead, he began his diatribe by attacking Marini, then going on to address the weaknesses of the man’s arguments. That won’t win you any points on the debate team, let me say.
I think quotations are fine for the generation reared on 15-second CNN sound bytes and ADD-oriented music videos. Cardinal Arinze has dropped a few zingers also. The real issues of liturgy cannot be summed up in quick quotes or in 1.4 second video scenes. The fact is that we have the liturgy we have. As poor as it may be in some peoples’ eyes, it still possesses the efficacy and potential to worship God and sanctify the people.
Tommassi might long to set up his own Consilium and right the Church’s perceived wrongs, but sadly (or not so sadly), he missed his opportunity.
How fondly they can look. I have only the current Mass, which I enjoy. That being said, the current Mass can be abused quite horribly. BTW, research Seattle Catholic. It is not afffiliated with any diocese.
I meant to say, I think it is not affiliated with any diocese.
[The Editor is aware of Seattle Catholic's non-affiliation with any diocese. The journal makes this very clear at the top of their homepage.]
