Analysis of music compositions

is being provided by Erik Keilholtz. His first subject is the Kyrie from Mass XI “Orbis Factor”. A MIDI file of the piece may be found at Mixolydian Mode. The analysis may be a bit deep for the non-musical, but it does serve as an example of how incredibly complex an unaccompanied melody can be. Probably the most powerful line in the analysis is this:

This Kyrie is a great example of economy in writing. In a few simple lines this piece conveys a rather complex structure with a powerful emotional punch. Note that all of this is accomplished without the use of harmony and with a narrow vocal range!

Now, this melody is complex, but is it too complex for a congregation to handle? Msgr. Hellriegel didn’t think so, and his flock proved him right many times over.

P. S. Mixolydian Mode provides new music for your ears every day.
