  1. Peace, Todd.

Indeed, in the Novus Ordo calendar it is the feast of Ss. Philip and James. But as the liturgical landscape stands, the 1962 rite adheres to the 1962 liturgical calendar.

In fact, the 1962 revisions added a feast for May 3 – the Finding of the Holy Cross – but there’s a section in the Liber Usualis titled “Saturdays in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary”.

Given that this was my first “Tridentine” Mass, the celebrants were Franciscans, this is the first Saturday in May, and they know the 1962 rite better than I, I deferred to their counsel, and they requested the Marian propers for Eastertide.

Until there’s a resolution to the liturgical question and “multiplicity of rites” in the Roman Church, I guess we’ll continue with the two calendars for the time being.

I envy you. I wish I were there.

I’m much older than you, so bear with me. If I remember right, “Missa de Angelis” was for feasts and solemnities. Our Lady’s Masses were sung with “Cum Jubilo” propers.

Nevertheless, I still envy you. I’ll sing any Latin propers given the chance – heck, even the “Jubilate Deo” recommendation, which, upon closer examination, turns out to be the old Missa Defunctis (Mass for the Dead.)

    Again, congratulations!

  3. Marie, you’re indeed correct. Mass VIII “De Angelis” was chosen for its assumed familiarity with the attendees. Mass XI “Cum Jubilo” and Mass X “Alme Pater” were designated for Our Lady’s Masses.

Some justification: on p. 78 of the Liber Usualis it reads, “This Ordinary is not meant to be a matter of hard and fast rule: chants from one Mass may be used together with those from others, the Ferial Masses [XVI and XVIII] excepted. In the same way, in order to add greater solemnity, one or more of the following “Chants ad libitum” may be employed.”

It was an exhilirating experience, errors in interpretation and all.

I’m looking for a score for Tone VIII Mass, and am having difficulty. Any suggestions?
