Recent books I’ve read
- The Liturgy After Vatican II, Denis Crouan
- The Liturgy Betrayed, Denis Crouan
- Reform of the Reform?, Fr. Thomas Kocik
If I were to recommend one of the above, it would be the Kocik work. To me, the Crouan books serve merely as confirmation of what I’ve experienced in liturgical practice (the “Mass of Paul VI”, that is). Fr. Kocik seems to present a balanced, charitable overview of “traditionalist” and “reformist” positions regarding the Sacred Liturgy.
Which may pose the question by some to me, “Where do you stand?” or “How would you label yourself?” To which I’d answer, I sympathize with all of those who would like to bring back a sense of classic reverence to the liturgy, whether it be in the 1962 rite or the 1969 rite. As a musician, I view the High Mass as the pinnacle of Eucharistic worship. As a musician sensitive to Sacrosanctum Concilium, I want to hear the people sing the Mass parts that pertain to them—in Latin. I love the grandeur of John 1:1-14. I have never been to a Mass celebrated according to the 1962 missal. How would you label me?

Sad, isn’t it, how desperately people want to label you?
On another board, if I so much as criticize the ICEL translation of the Mass of Paul VI (for it’s banality, but worse, its inaccuracy,) I am immediately howled at as a “Tridentinist!”
My label would be ‘Seriously Deprived’. If you would like the location of the Indult Mass closest to you please contact me.
why, i’d label you a catholic. this is one label you’d like to be labeled with, i would think..:-)
the Mass in latin is wonderful, epsecially the tridentine rite. this is the only Mass i’ve ever loved. that might label me a ‘traditionalist’, but not really because i have some views which are seriously untraditional.
