Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

Music for Mass

Opening: Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee (HYMN TO JOY)
Responsorial Psalm: Respond & Acclaim (OCP)
Gospel Acclamation: R&A (OCP)
Preparation: Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life (THE CALL)
Sanctus, Anamnesis A, Amen: People’s Mass (Vermulst)
Agnus Dei: Heritage Mass (Alstott)
Communion: Taste and See (Talbot)
Closing: Amazing Grace* (NEW BRITAIN)

* Alternate text (as requested): “…and set me free!” **
** For what it’s worth, the choir members prefer to sing: “…a wretch like me!” ***
*** The original lyrics read: “…a worm like me!” Try to find that in one of today’s hymnals. If you do, it sure won’t be in a Catholic one. Right?

  1. Gordon Zaft says:

Words cannot express how much I despise the “alternate” lyrics for Amazing Grace.

  2. Of course, any attempt to enforce singing the alternative lyrics will be thwarted. I recall a Mass at Cornell last March at which Bishop Matthew Clark presided. The cantor announced Amazing Grace as our closing hymn. She even announced, “We will be singing the alternate lyrics.” True to form, some people still sang “wretch.” Among them was the Bishop. Oh well…

  3. Pat Mulcahy says:

I agree. It’s impossible to get people to sing the alternate lyrics. And who can blame them?
