A tale of two styles

Today on his blog, Mark Sullivan features commentary on Roger Cardinal Mahony’s new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, which reminded me of an event that happened recently.

About two months ago, I asked my dad to view two cathedrals in the making—Antoni Gaudi’s Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in L. A. When he viewed the former, he said with a palpable tone of awe, “Now that is a house of God.” Upon viewing the latter, he let out an uneasy laugh and said in a tone of disbelief, “Wow.”

My two cents? The L.A. cathedral is to the Barcelona cathedral as popular praise music is to Palestrina.

(If you like what you see, you can make a donation to the Barcelona cathedral to speed its completion.)
